Youth Spotlight - Selena

Selena has worked hard and persevered through much adversity to get where she is today. She first experienced homelessness at age 18, after bravely deciding to leave a domestic violence situation in her home. She eventually made her way to Denver and was referred to Urban Peak.

Since joining the Urban Peak family, Selena frequently joins youth groups and activities, attends case management regularly and recently landed a job with Denver Public Schools (DPS)! Now employed, she excitedly moved into our independent living transitional neighborhood at The Mothership. As she settles in, her immediate goals are to continue working on her mental health and pay off her debts. Down the line, she wants to save money to buy a car and go back to college.

Selena describes herself as a “kind-hearted, loving and optimistic” person, with which her case manager Giselle wholeheartedly agreed. Giselle further shared that Selena “is always cracking jokes and always has a smile on her face.” She loves music, reading and writing, and someday hopes to write a book!

For now, Selena is happy to have found gainful employment and a safe place to call home with Urban Peak. When asked if she’d want to share anything with this community, she reminded us- “don’t say you can’t do something until you try it.” Wise words indeed. We are thrilled to be supporting Selena on her journey to self-sufficiency and success and can’t wait to see the amazing things she does next!
